Matt Riddle Contemplates MMA Return in 2024 Amidst Wrestling Success

Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA in 2024

Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestler Matt Riddle is considering a return to mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2024. At 37, Riddle is exploring options for a comeback that could see him step back into the ring or cage after a decade-long hiatus from the sport.

While Riddle has been in talks with various organizations, he has yet to reveal specific details about his potential return. However, sources such as the Wrestling Observer Newsletter have hinted at possible interest from bare-knuckle fighting promotions and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).

A Look Back at Riddle's MMA Career

Riddle's last appearance in MMA was in February 2014 when he faced Michael Kuiper at Titan FC. Before transitioning to professional wrestling, he had an eventful stint in the UFC, where he left on a four-win streak in 2013 after a victory over Che Mills. However, two of those wins were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, which led to criticism from UFC President Dana White upon Riddle's departure from the organization.

Despite the controversial end to his UFC tenure, Riddle has maintained a positive outlook on the situation. He credits White's public criticism with raising his profile and inadvertently helping to kickstart his "bro" character, which has become a staple of his wrestling persona.

Transition to Professional Wrestling

After leaving MMA, Riddle quickly pivoted to professional wrestling. He began training in 2014 and made his debut the following year. Riddle's natural charisma and athletic prowess helped him make a name for himself on the independent circuit, where he captured several titles.

In 2018, Riddle's career took a significant leap forward when he joined WWE NXT. There, he achieved notable success by winning the NXT Tag Team Championship with Pete Dunne. His momentum continued as he moved to the main roster, capturing the United States Championship in February 2021.

One of Riddle's most prominent storylines involved teaming up with veteran wrestler Randy Orton to form the tag team "RK-Bro." Together, they secured the Raw Tag Team Championship twice, further cementing Riddle's status as a versatile and entertaining performer.

Despite his wrestling commitments, Riddle has stayed close to his combat sports roots. He continues to practice martial arts regularly and holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu—an indication that his fighting skills remain sharp.

Riddle's Presence in the Combat Sports Community

Riddle's interest in combat sports extends beyond his own participation. He was recently spotted at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, signaling his ongoing engagement with the fight community.

Riddle Reflects on His Journey and Future

In conversations with MMA Junkie, Riddle expressed a strong desire to return to competitive fighting. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," he said. While he remains tight-lipped about the specifics, he acknowledges that a 2024 return is highly likely if the conditions are right.

Riddle also reflected on his departure from the UFC and subsequent rise in professional wrestling. "I have to thank Dana because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," he remarked. This candid acknowledgment shows that Riddle harbors no ill will towards White and remains open-minded about his past and future in the fighting world.

When discussing his potential return to MMA, Riddle maintains a realistic yet optimistic attitude. "I never say never," he stated. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge." He reminisces about his transition from the UFC to pro wrestling with pride, emphasizing his successful run in the squared circle while also expressing a longing to re-experience the thrill of combat sports competition.

"I did good (and am) still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?" Riddle mused.

As Riddle contemplates his future, fans of both MMA and professional wrestling eagerly await the next chapter in the career of this multifaceted athlete. Whether he returns to the cage or continues to entertain in the wrestling ring, Matt Riddle's drive and passion for competition remain undeniable.
