Breaking New Ground in the NHL: Jessica Campbell Joins the Seattle Kraken Coaching Staff

The Seattle Kraken have made history by appointing Jessica Campbell to their coaching staff, making her the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the National Hockey League’s storied history. Campbell’s trailblazing career continues to blaze new paths, and this latest move underscores her exceptional talent and dedication to the game.

From the AHL to the NHL

Prior to joining the Kraken, Campbell was an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, an affiliate team in the American Hockey League (AHL). Her impact there was profound, guiding the team’s power play and significantly contributing to player development. During her tenure, one of her standout players, Tye Kartye, was recognized for his exceptional talent by winning the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for the most outstanding rookie.

Kraken coach Dan Bylsma, who worked closely with Campbell in Coachella Valley, underscored her dedication and ability to forge meaningful relationships with players. “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level,” Bylsma remarked.

A Trailblazer with a Decorated Past

Campbell’s coaching accolades are numerous and significant. In 2014-15, she served as team captain in the first-ever Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) All-Star Game. By 2022, she had broken another barrier, becoming the first woman to coach in the AHL. Her expertise extends beyond team strategy; she has also been influential as a power-skating coach for notable athletes, including Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson.

Adding to her impressive resume, Campbell became the first woman to coach a men’s national team during the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship with Team Germany. During this championship, she notably worked with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer, showcasing her versatility and high level of expertise. Her role in these various capacities demonstrates not only her skill but also the significant trust placed in her by numerous high-profile teams.

Commitment to Growth and Excellence

As Campbell steps into her role with the Seattle Kraken, she reflects a humble yet determined mindset. “I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be—it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” Campbell expressed. Her dedication to continuous improvement is evident in her approach. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me, it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal.”

Besides the acknowledgment of her past achievements, Campbell's philosophy is forward-focused, emphasizing daily growth and development. “I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is,” she said, underscoring her long-term vision and commitment to her craft.

Shaping the Future

With Campbell potentially heading the Kraken’s power play, expectations are high. Her proven expertise and innovative strategies are anticipated to bring a new dynamic to the team. Additionally, the Kraken’s recent signing of 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour suggests a powerful synergy that could propel the team to new heights.

As the NHL moves into a new season, all eyes will be on how Jessica Campbell integrates into her new role and how her impact will manifest on the ice. Her journey from a player to a coach breaking barriers at every turn is a testament to her resilience, skill, and passion for hockey. The Seattle Kraken’s decision to bring her on board not only enriches their coaching team but also marks a significant and inspiring moment in the history of the NHL.

Indeed, Jessica Campbell’s story is one of pioneering spirit, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of excellence, positions her as not just a coach, but a role model for many in the sports community.
