Stafford Reworks Contract with Rams, Eyes Flexibility for Future
Quarterback Matthew Stafford, a pivotal figure in the Los Angeles Rams' recent successes, has agreed to a restructured contract with the team. Having recently reported to training camp, Stafford's revised deal promises significant immediate financial benefits.
The new arrangement includes a generous $12.5 million signing bonus and a $23.5 million guarantee for the current year. Additionally, the contract offers a $4 million guaranteed roster bonus to be paid in March. This restructuring provides Stafford with the flexibility to negotiate a new contract next offseason, positioning him advantageously for potential future negotiations.
Part of the revised agreement sees Stafford relinquishing his 2025 guarantees in favor of a one-year deal worth $40 million. This maneuver allows both the player and the franchise to reassess their options after the upcoming season, giving the Rams an opportunity to manage their salary cap more effectively.
Stafford joined the Rams in a high-profile trade from the Detroit Lions in 2021. His impact was immediate and substantial, leading the team to victory in Super Bowl LVI. Stafford’s performance in his first season with the Rams was remarkable, tying a career high with 41 touchdown passes.
His exceptional play was recognized with a four-year, $160 million contract extension following that season. Since donning the Rams uniform, Stafford has compiled a 24-17 record as a starter, throwing 75 touchdowns against 36 interceptions.
Reflecting on the recent developments, Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed relief. "I'm relieved that this issue has been resolved," McVay stated, highlighting the importance of securing Stafford's place on the team amid contract discussions.
Stafford’s 2023 season was notably strong, as he threw an NFL-high 15 touchdowns over the final six weeks of the regular season. Leading the seventh-ranked offense in the league, he also earned his second career Pro Bowl selection. Despite an impressive 5-1 record as a starter, Stafford was rested for the regular season finale, a move aimed at preserving his health for future contests.
The restructured deal, while beneficial for Stafford in the short term, maintains the Rams' competitive edge and retains their star quarterback, ensuring continuity and stability for the franchise.
