Former NFL wide receiver and return specialist Jacoby Jones passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans on Sunday, just days after celebrating his 40th birthday. Jones, remembered as one of the most electrifying players on special teams, leaves behind a legacy that resonates deeply within the NFL community and beyond.
Jones' career reached its pinnacle during the Baltimore Ravens' 2012 Super Bowl triumph, where his extraordinary performances left an indelible mark on football history. In Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers, Jones shattered records with a 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, the longest in Super Bowl and postseason history. He also connected with quarterback Joe Flacco for a 56-yard touchdown reception, amassing a Super Bowl record of 290 total yards in the game.
The Ravens organization, in a heartfelt statement, expressed their grief and empathy: “We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones. Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy, and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day. Jacoby will long be remembered not just for his success on the football field, but for the lasting personal connections he made with countless people in the Ravens organization, Baltimore community, and every area he called home. We share our deepest condolences with Jacoby’s family as we all begin to process this devastating loss.”
Jones' contributions to the Ravens extended beyond the Super Bowl. In the AFC divisional round of the same year, he caught a crucial 70-yard touchdown pass against the Denver Broncos, propelling Baltimore to a double-overtime victory. His consistency and explosive playmaking ability solidified his reputation, setting franchise records for career kickoff return average (30.1 yards) and single-season kickoff return average (30.7 yards in 2012).
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh shared his personal sentiments, emphasizing the profound impact Jones had off the field: “I loved Jacoby Jones, we all did. His spirit, enthusiasm, and love for people were powerful. He was a light. He was the cherished son of his loving mom, Ms. Emily. They were so close. He was a man of faith. My favorite Jacoby personal moment was every time I saw his smiling face full of joy. Rest in peace, Jacoby, in the arms of Jesus.”
Drafted in the third round by the Houston Texans in 2007, Jones spent his first five NFL seasons in Houston, where he established himself as a formidable return specialist, holding the Texans' franchise record for career punt return average (10.2 yards). His time with the Texans laid the groundwork for his later achievements with the Ravens, where he became a First-Team All-Pro returner and earned Pro Bowl honors.
After his tenure with the Ravens, Jones had brief stints with the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin also extended his sympathies, reflecting on his time coaching Jones: “My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Jacoby Jones during this difficult time. I enjoyed coaching him during his time with the Steelers.”
Jones officially retired as a Raven in 2016, opting to walk away from the game while still being celebrated for his remarkable contributions. Post-retirement, he dedicated his time to nurturing the next generation of talent as the head coach for the Beaumont Renegades football club in Beaumont, Texas. Sam Gordon, the owner of the Beaumont Renegades, highlighted Jones' character and devotion to others: “He was the best, he loved everyone. I think one of the most important things is he was a man of God. He was proud of how much he loved and feared his God. What was most important to him after football was helping the next person in line. He was the most humble and kind person to anybody who gave him the time and needed the time from him.”
Jones is survived by his son, also named Jacoby, and his mother, Emily. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many who cherished his vibrant presence and unwavering kindness. As the NFL community and fans worldwide mourn the loss of Jacoby Jones, they also celebrate the irreplaceable joy and unforgettable moments he provided both on and off the field.
