As the 2024 NFL season approaches, all 32 teams are diligently working to finalize their rosters, making critical decisions on last-minute cuts and trades. This period inevitably sees several notable players becoming cutdown casualties, and this year is no different.
Quarterbacks on the Move
A number of quarterbacks, some with substantial potential, have found themselves without a team. The Detroit Lions released a former Indiana standout, a 6-6, 230-pound quarterback who had previously trained under coaches Doug Pederson and Kyle Shanahan during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. Despite having thrown only 14 passes over the past six seasons, he brought significant experience and knowledge to the table. Ultimately, Hendon Hooker secured the backup role to Jared Goff, leading to the release.
Chicago Bears Shake-Up
In Chicago, Brett Rypien was let go after a promising preseason debut where he showcased his downfield chemistry with wideout Collin Johnson. Despite his efforts, Tyson Bagent outperformed Rypien for the backup spot behind Caleb Williams. Brett Rypien began his NFL career with the Denver Broncos, where he compiled a respectable 2-1 record as a starter. However, this preseason’s competition proved too fierce, resulting in his release.
Arizona Cardinals Decision
The Arizona Cardinals also made headlines by releasing Desmond Ridder, who had been acquired in an offseason player-for-player trade. Originally a third-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2022, Ridder struggled to secure his place with the Cardinals. Clayton Tune emerged as the preferred backup to Kyler Murray, pushing Ridder out of the roster.
Patriots' Quarterback Room
In New England, Bailey Zappe became another casualty. Drafted in the fourth round by the Patriots in 2022, Zappe compiled an even 4-4 record as a replacement starter, tallying 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions over his first two years. Despite showing flashes of potential, the Patriots opted to waive Zappe in favor of their current lineup, which includes Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye, and Joe Milton III.
Jacksonville Jaguars Adjustments
CJ Beathard’s tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars came to an end with an injury settlement. Originally drafted in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, Beathard showed reliability during his opportunities, throwing six touchdowns and zero interceptions while filling in during the 2022 season. However, his time with the Jaguars was marked by limited playtime, making only one start over three years. The Jaguars' acquisition of Mac Jones via trade further solidified the decision to move on from Beathard.
The flurry of roster changes signifies the highly competitive nature of the NFL, where teams are constantly in flux, even after the initial cutdown to 53 players. Each team is meticulously reshaping its roster, ensuring they have the best possible lineup heading into the new season.
