The Philadelphia Eagles are ushering in a new era at the center position as Cam Jurgens steps into the spotlight, taking over from veteran Jason Kelce. The transition marks a significant change for the team, as Jurgens, who has played 43 snaps at center over his two NFL seasons, has yet to start a game in this critical role. Nonetheless, confidence in his ability to manage the position is growing.
Jurgens has spent the last two years demonstrating his versatility across the offensive line. Although primarily a center at heart, he earned the starting right guard spot last year and flourished. Remarkably, during his tenure at right guard, Jurgens did not allow a single sack in 631 pass-blocking snaps and conceded only 18 pressures, resulting in an impressive pressure rate allowed per dropback of just 4.9%.
Now, as he transitions back to his natural position at center, Jurgens is focusing on establishing himself and developing the necessary communication with his teammates. Eagles guard Landon Dickerson, a close observer of Jurgens' evolution, praised his colleague's approach and temperament.
“He’s gonna hear it from you guys all the time. That’s gonna happen. No offense, you guys got used to that and that’s gonna be your comparison. And so, he’s handling that extremely well. It’s not trying to replace Kelce. Cam’s gonna make his own legacy, his own path, his own destiny. He’s gonna be Cam Jurgens. His name is not Jason Kelce. He’s not gonna try to be 62. He’s gonna do what Cam Jurgens does.”

Dickerson's comments underscore the natural challenge Jurgens faces in stepping into a role once held by a team legend. However, he is adamant that Jurgens is his own player, poised to craft his own legacy on the gridiron. The physicality, intelligence, and strength he brings are being highlighted as key traits in his development.
“Cam’s creating his own path right now. Really smart guy, physical guy, strong guy. Moves well. He’s handling this transition from going from guard and a little bit of center last year to playing center right now. Communication has been good.”

Indeed, communication is a linchpin in Jurgens’ current role, ensuring seamless operations during games and practices alike. The Eagles have seen varying personnel changes this offseason, which has necessitated increased adaptability from all players. The arrival of Mekhi Becton has added to the dynamic environment within the team, leading to a rotation of players at different tackle spots and additional layers of complexity in maintaining cohesive line play.
“You never know what happens when guys get hurt right? You’re rotating guys in. Mekhi’s [Becton] coming in. We got guys stepping in at different tackle (spots). Changing up the group. Just the way he’s been able to handle the communication and different guys get out there, you never know what’s gonna happen. I think he’s done a tremendous job so far of just (providing) clear communication to everybody and setting the standard of how things are supposed to be done in the huddle before we get them the ball. He’s handling it great.”

As Jurgens steps into shoes filled by a player of Kelce’s stature, the pressure is undoubtedly high. But early indications suggest a budding leader poised to make his own mark while steering the Eagles' offensive line with clarity and precision. Although it's still early days, the groundwork Jurgens is laying now will be pivotal for the Eagles’ future success, both this season and beyond.
The Philadelphia Eagles and their fans will undoubtedly watch with keen eyes as Jurgens develops into the athlete they hope he can be, fostering a legacy built on his own merits and contributions to the team.
