A Season of Brotherhood: Maddox Mentors Mitchell on and Off the Field
In an NFL world where competition is fierce and roster spots are coveted, the relationship between veteran cornerback Avonte Maddox and rookie Quinyon Mitchell is a refreshing reminder of the camaraderie that can exist within a team. This season, Maddox has taken Mitchell under his wing, offering guidance both on and off the field.
A Helping Hand When Needed
The bond between the two players extends beyond the gridiron. Mitchell once found himself in a predicament when his car ran out of gas while crossing the Walt Whitman Bridge. He reached out to Maddox, who didn't hesitate to come to his aid. "His car ran out of gas going across the bridge. He called me. I stopped to pick him up. So it doesn't matter. Whenever he needs me," Maddox recollected.
This gesture is a testament to the type of mentorship Maddox provides. Mitchell has reciprocated this support by showing eagerness to learn and grow under Maddox’s tutelage. “He's definitely doing a great job. He's smart. He knows football. I just give him the concepts of what I'm looking at, seeing here and there, how they're lining up, what would I do in this situation or that situation,” Mitchell shared about his mentor.
On-Field Guidance
Maddox, who has had to fight for his roster spot, recognizes the importance of guiding young talents like Mitchell. Sharing his knowledge of the slot cornerback position, Maddox ensures that Mitchell receives thorough instruction. This commitment to his mentee promotes a culture of learning and growth within the team.
Moreover, under current circumstances, Maddox himself is adapting to new challenges. With C.J. Gardner-Johnson sidelined due to a shoulder injury, Maddox has temporarily shifted to playing safety. He has embraced the role with a positive attitude, seeing it as an opportunity to expand his skill set. "It's been getting better every day. I've been working a lot at the safety spot. It's been valuable for me because I need the reps, seeing it a little bit different. But it's making sure I get the fundamentals and the footwork down," Maddox explained.
Knowledge and Leadership
Maddox’s adaptability underscores his value to the Philadelphia Eagles, who benefit from his versatility in the secondary. His comprehensive understanding of the team's defensive calls and formations makes him an invaluable asset. "I know all the calls. I know where I'm supposed to be at the moment, and I know where all my teammates are supposed to be," he stated with confidence.
For Mitchell, having a mentor like Maddox is priceless. The rookie frequently peppered Maddox with questions, eager to absorb as much knowledge as possible. "He asks (questions) every day. That's encouraging to see because when you got questions, that means you care, you want to learn, you want to be out there," said Maddox.
Building for the Future
Despite the competitive nature of their profession, Maddox emphasizes the importance of collaboration and support among teammates. "Me and him can compete at it, but at the end of the day, if he has a question, I would never turn my back. I would never not tell him the right answer. Any time he needs extra work, any time he would need to know an answer to anything, I would help him," he assured.
Maddox’s mentorship has undoubtedly created a positive impact on Mitchell and the wider team. The veteran cornerback is keenly aware that helping his younger teammate succeed will strengthen the team overall. "It's never a battle between us in that way. On the field, it's all about competition and me helping him get better because at some point, I'll be done with football, and he'll still be going, and I want him to be the best he can be," Maddox reflected.
The mutual respect and support between Maddox and Mitchell is a shining example of how individual ambitions can align with team success. As Madden continues to adapt to his new role and Mitchell continues to grow under his wing, the Philadelphia Eagles stand to benefit from this shared journey of improvement and mentorship.
