Frank Selvy, famed for his remarkable scoring ability and a trailblazer in college basketball, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91. His family announced that he died peacefully at his home in Simpsonville. The news was confirmed by the Furman athletic department.

A Record-Breaking Achievement

Frank Selvy holds an indelible mark in NCAA history, being the only player to score a monumental 100 points in a single Division I game. In that game, Selvy demonstrated his outstanding prowess by netting 41 field goals and 18 free throws.

Born in Corbin, Kentucky, Selvy made a lasting impact during his collegiate career at Furman University from 1952 to 1954. His scoring talent was evident as he led the NCAA in scoring twice, and his senior year saw him averaging an astonishing 41.7 points per game. Selvy scored 40 points or more in 22 of his total 78 college games. His exceptional performances earned him Southern Conference player of the year honors for two consecutive seasons, 1952-53 and 1953-54, and a three-time All-America selection.

During this time, he was part of the franchise’s transition from Minneapolis to Los Angeles in 1960.

Legacy at Furman

After his time in the NBA, Selvy returned to his roots at Furman University, where he took on the role of coach for four seasons.
