Joel Embiid Extends Stay with 76ers Through 2028-29
Philadelphia received a significant boost with the announcement that Joel Embiid, their star center and franchise cornerstone, has committed to a three-year max contract extension. The deal, valued at $193 million, secures the Cameroonian through the 2028-29 season.
The extension features a player option for the final year, ensuring Embiid's pay will rise markedly throughout the duration. Notably, Embiid turned down a $59 million player option for the 2026-27 season, instead opting for a new structure that guarantees him an estimated $59.3 million that year. By the 2027-28 season, his salary will ramp up to approximately $64.3 million, and should he choose to exercise his player option for the 2028-29 season, he will earn around $69.1 million.
This lucrative deal sets Embiid on a path to surpass $500 million in total career earnings, with his estimated haul over the next five years alone standing at $299.5 million.
"Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career," declared Embiid. "I love this community and everything you've given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship and I think we're just getting started!" This heartfelt commitment underscores not only his loyalty but his ambition to bring ultimate glory to the 76ers.
Star Power and Strategic Moves
The 76ers have been aggressive in reinforcing their roster this offseason. In addition to locking down Embiid, they've signed Paul George to a four-year max deal and Tyrese Maxey to a five-year max deal. These commitments reflect the franchise’s resolve, with approximately $715 million allocated towards these three key players.
Supplementing their star trio, the team has added notable talents such as Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon, Reggie Jackson, and Guerschon Yabusele. Veteran presences like Kelly Oubre Jr. and Kyle Lowry have also returned, signaling the team's depth and versatility heading into the new season. The strategic re-signing of K.J. Martin, anticipated as a trade asset, also showcases the team's long-term planning.
"Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game. We're ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come," expressed Philadelphia 76ers Managing Partner Josh Harris.
Harris continued, "Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely – if ever – seen. He is integral to this franchise's quest for another NBA Championship, and we are honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home."
Recent Achievements and Legacy
Embiid's performance last season was nothing short of spectacular. Averaging 34.7 points, 5.6 assists, 11.0 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game, he clearly demonstrated why he remains an essential asset to the 76ers. His commanding usage rate of 38.7% further emphasizes his centrality to the team’s strategy.
In his career, Embiid has participated in seven All-Star Games, been selected for five All-NBA teams, and three All-Defensive Teams. Most recently, he won a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympics in Paris, adding to his impressive list of accolades.
The 76ers have been consistent performers, with only the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, and Denver Nuggets boasting more wins since the 2017-18 campaign. However, their playoff journey has seen roadblocks, as they have not advanced past the second round in recent seasons. Embiid, now 35 by the contract's end, remains optimistic about changing that narrative.
Embiid fondly reflects on his journey: "I started a Sixer and want to be right here for the rest of my career. I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia."
The journey is far from over. With a revamped roster and renewed leadership, the 76ers are positioning themselves for a serious title run. Embiid, emboldened by his connection to Philadelphia, concluded, "I want to thank Josh, David [Blitzer], and the entire organization. Philadelphia is home and it's time to bring this community an NBA championship."
With anticipation and excitement at an all-time high, the city of Philadelphia stands firmly behind their star as he continues to chase greatness and deliver on his promise to bring the championship home.
