Milwaukee Brewers' star outfielder Christian Yelich will miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB season due to a scheduled back surgery. The announcement was made on Thursday by both Yelich and the Brewers, marking the latest chapter in the outfielder's ongoing struggle with lower back issues.
Yelich, who hasn't played since July 23, has battled persistent back problems for much of his career. This season, he had been a bright spot for the Brewers, turning in a stellar performance before his injury. In just 73 games, Yelich boasted a .315/.406/.504 slash line, complemented by 11 home runs and 21 stolen bases. His efforts translated to a remarkable 152 OPS+, underscoring his value to the team.
“After careful consideration and consultation with medical personnel, I have decided to undergo season-ending back surgery,” Yelich shared. “I ultimately felt it was in the best interest of myself and the Brewers to have the surgery with the expectation of being back at 100% for next season.”
The surgery, scheduled for Friday, will be performed by Dr. Brandon Rebholz. While Yelich expresses optimism about his return next year, his absence leaves a significant gap in the Brewers' lineup. The organization had attempted to acquire a new left-handed bat before the July 30 trade deadline but were unsuccessful.
Despite Yelich's absence, the Brewers have managed a commendable 11-9 record. The current standings place the team at 69-52, holding a commanding nine-game lead in the NL Central. This marks the largest division lead in baseball, displaying the depth and resilience of the roster, which includes left-handed hitters like Jake Bauers, Tyler Black, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Brice Turang.
“We have a very special team here and it will be disappointing not to be able to contribute on the field down the stretch,” Yelich admitted. “However, I have the utmost confidence in my teammates and will be cheering them on with all of you, the great fans of Milwaukee.”
Yelich’s battle with back problems is not new; he has faced similar issues throughout his career, including this latest bout of lower back inflammation since July. This year marks the fifth of a nine-year, $215 million contract extension he signed in March 2020, which secures him an annual salary of $26 million from 2025 to 2028. Additionally, the contract includes a $20 million mutual option for 2029. Despite his offensive prowess, Yelich's defensive metrics have notably declined, grading him below average at this stage in his career.
The Brewers' management and fans alike will need to adapt to life without their star outfielder for the remainder of this season. However, their strong current position provides a cushion, giving them a chance to prepare adequately for the postseason. Yelich's message to the fans encapsulates his dedication and optimism: “Thank you for all your support. Go Brewers!”
With Yelich's surgery on the horizon, the focus will inevitably shift to his recovery and the steps the Brewers will take to fill his void. While his contributions on the field will undoubtedly be missed, his positive outlook and supportive presence will continue to inspire the team and its fans.
As the Brewers look to extend their lead and make a push for the playoffs, the collective effort of the team's roster will be pivotal. The hope remains that Yelich will return stronger and healthier, ready to make an impact in the seasons to come. Until then, the Milwaukee Brewers will endeavor to carry the momentum and spirit Yelich has helped to build, aiming to bring success to the franchise and its loyal supporters.
