"Chris and I spoke about my 20 years in bingo, and he spoke about his 50 years! And we just seemed to hit it off." With gracious humility, Clavering invited Cockburn to return to his roots, offering a role that reignited Cockburn's passion for the game: "He eventually asked if I was going to come and work for him. I eventually gave in and agreed. I was back in bingo!"

Clavering, in declining health, took a characteristically straightforward approach, offering Cockburn the keys to The Ritz, his cherished club. "One day he handed his keys to me as he said he wasn’t well, and just asked me to keep things going," Cockburn recounts. This generous gesture was complemented by another as Clavering offered Cockburn ownership of The Ritz. "It was at this point that he offered for me to take over the club and become the new owner."

Clavering passed away merely a week after this pivotal transfer, yet his confidence in Cockburn’s stewardship was clear. Cockburn, deeply influenced and grateful, expressed his appreciation not in words but in actions. "I thanked him, and he said that it was him that should be thanking me. I was ensuring that his beloved club and legacy was to carry on." Thus, the story of The Ritz continued, its legacy carefully nurtured by someone who knew its importance to the community.

Now the custodian of Clavering’s esteemed legacy, Cockburn is both appreciative and motivated. "It’s about keeping his legacy going… It was a promise, and I don’t need to change it," he insists.
